Organizers with the Denver Democratic Socialists of America and other advocates plan an event at the Colorado Capitol lawn to highlight the risk of eviction for thousands of Colorado renters and to call on Gov. Jared Polis to take action.

“We’ll be setting up tents and banners across the Capitol lawn, calling on the governor to cancel rent — symbolizing the 400,000 Coloradans who are vulnerable to displacement,” says a press release from Kaley LaQuea, DDSA’s communication chair.

The event is planned for noon Wednesday. Denver Council member Candi CdeBaca will participate in the event, the press release says. Other groups listed as participants include Denver Homeless Out Loud, Colorado Jobs With Justice and Colorado Poor People’s Campaign.

The economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has left many Coloradans out of work. The state’s unemployment rate reached 12.2% in April.
